SEO is the acronym of "Search Engine Optimisation"

It is the action of optimizing your content to make it Google and search engines friendly.

SEO is a method used to rank better on search engines. It is part of a webmarketing strategy to make your website more visible on the web.

A good SEO strategy can drive a lot of organic traffic on your website and by then: Increasing your conversions.

Organic traffic is earned rather than paid for. It includes few hundreds of "must do" points and to be successful, it requires a lot of time and resource.

Search engines and their algorithms have gotten better with time to identify the intent of millions of search queries which makes choosing the right keywords to drive traffic even more important and... difficult.

It is unfortunately not that easy...

Ranking Brain (Google's algorithm for example) will analyze the source of a certain traffic spike before pushing your website up in the rankings.

Of course 10 000 users coming from a Facebook advertisement won't have the same impact than 10 000 users coming organically who have decided to voluntarily click on your link.

SEO takes time because of 2 different factors. Search engine algorithms have become more and more advanced with an ultimate goal of making the users happy with the most relevant search results based on their queries. For example an ice shop should normally not be able to rank for keywords related to a locksmith activity.

15 years ago, you could have been able to cheat on the system by putting 100 times the keyword you want to rank for on the same page. Today, things have changed and way more parameters got included to be able to rank better. Furthermore, spamming your website nowadays would most likely do more harm than good.

In general, when we get a kick-off meeting with one of our new client the following question arises pretty fast: "What are the most important factors to rank better?"

Well, there is no perfect way of doing SEO. Only Google's algorithm knows which criterias determine how good a page ranks. However some of the "best practices" are more or less famous & discovered. Backlinto created a very informative list with the Top 200 ranking factors.

SEM (Search Engine Marketing) is the marketing technic used to optimize your rankings on search engines. Within this webmarketing methology, there are two families:

  • -SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)
  • -SEA (Search Engine Advertisement)

One (the SEO) promotes organic search to increase traffic while the SEA uses marketing campaings (i.g. Google Ads) to push the defined website up in the rankings.
